Most 'free' CAD software isn't as free as it sounds. We compare browser-based, desktop, open-source and commercial CAD tools to help you choose the right one for your workflow.

Search for best free online CAD software and you'll quickly discover that almost every product claims to be free. In reality, "free" can mean anything from a generous community edition to a 14-day trial, a personal-use licence, or software that only works if you install it on your own computer.

That makes choosing a CAD package surprisingly difficult.

After talking with engineers, architects, fabricators, surveyors, and designers, we've found that people usually ask the wrong question.

Instead of asking:

"Which CAD software is free?"

A better question is:

"Which CAD software fits the way I actually work?"

The important question isn't which one has the biggest feature list.

It's which one matches your workflow.

Where existing CAD software works well

LibreCAD

LibreCAD is probably the best-known open-source 2D CAD application.

It's mature, stable, completely free, and capable of producing professional drawings.

If you're happy installing software and mostly work alone, it's an excellent choice.

Where it starts to struggle is collaboration. Drawings remain files that need to be shared manually, and revision history is largely your responsibility.

QCAD

QCAD has been around for many years and is popular among engineers looking for a lightweight drafting package.

It performs well and has a familiar workflow.

Like most desktop CAD applications, collaboration is handled outside the software using shared folders, cloud storage or email.

AutoCAD Web

AutoCAD remains the industry standard in many organisations.

However, it's part of a commercial ecosystem and may be more than many small businesses or freelancers actually need.

Onshape

Although primarily a 3D CAD platform, Onshape deserves mention because it demonstrated how collaborative engineering software could work in the browser.
